Waste Management Regulations Continue To Bite
The Skip Hire industry has never really had a voice amongst the larger industries of construction and Waste Management but that has changed with trade magazine, “The Skip”, now a central point for a variety of issues.
Health and Safety is just one area which is now paramount, with many hire firms being the subject of various legal actions, through no real fault of their own. The “blame” culture which has blighted the US for many years, is growing ever stronger in the UK and the industry is starting to take this very seriously. Many companies have expanded by the use of Commercial Mortgages which means that the business can be at stake in the event of successful legal actions against hire firms.
The industry is hitting back with a range of equipment including Skip locks, Skip lights, Skip nets and Skip ramps now common place when any size of skip is out on hire. By being seen to do as much as possible to avert accidents and damage to the surroundings, the hire companies should see a reduction in claims against them - allowing the industry to move forward.
The use of a Screen Trommel is now common place in many of these waste management companies, allowing the majority of waste to be recycled, thereby reducing the requirement for excessive land fill storage. This operation in itself can be dangerous, with large rotating cylinders sorting the different sized materials, and like most areas of business today, suitable Safety Clothing is of vital importance.
While the industry continues to be hit by growing regulations and increased risk of fines, etc, the Skip Hire companies are fighting back and putting their house in order. The industry is currently booming, and while this is the case it is easy to fund the extra burden of increased regulation, but who will help if the industry goes through a quiet period?
